Leaks, rumors and everything we know so far

While Apple hasn’t made any official dates yet, the . The iPhone 14 series is expected in September. This year, leaks have already suggested a lot about the new iPhone 14 series, including major differences between the Pro and non-Pro models, the lack of a “mini” variant, and also a new design choice for Apple’s signature notch. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming iPhone 14 series.

No more ‘mini’

Leaks have been suggesting for months that the iPhone 14 series will come without a compact ‘mini’ variant. Apple has apparently decided to ditch the tiny iPhone due to poor sales and won’t continue making them out of the iPhone 14 series. While the flagship number range focuses on larger phones, Apple fans who want a compact device should now be left with only the iPhone SE range.

Four new iPhone variants

Despite the lack of a ‘mini’ variant, Apple will make four different iPhone variants this year, just like the iPhone 12 and 13 series. This year, however, a new iPhone 14 Max will debut, alongside the usual lineup of a vanilla Apple iPhone 14, an iPhone 14 Pro, and a 14 Pro Max. This leaves buyers with two choices for a large iPhone, as they can get a larger iPhone without spending more money behind a ‘Pro’ variant just for size.

Different chipsets in the series

The iPhone 14 series may also be the first iPhone series where we can see different chipsets powering the Pro and non-Pro variants of the phone. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will only bring the new A16 Bionic chip to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max may still be powered by last year’s A15 chip, or a variant of it with some changes.

Apple is also reportedly bringing new components from Sony (for the camera) and LG (for the phone’s display) just for the Pro variants, suggesting that the non-Pro iPhone 14 variants may not see a major camera upgrade compared to the previous year neither.

New ‘i-shaped’ notch

The new iPhone 14 series is also reportedly the first to ditch the signature Apple notch and implement a new i-shaped notch instead. This includes a round cutout for a perforation and a longer pill-shaped notch. While the hole is expected to house the front camera, the pill-shaped notch could house the IR sensors for Apple’s FaceID functionality.

However, we still don’t know if the new design will come to all four models or just the Pro variants.

As you can see, not much of a difference in design is expected this year other than the new notches. The phones have the same metal chassis design and a triple camera setup on the back.

iPhone 14 Max could be scarce at launch

The latest entry in the lineup, the non-Pro ‘Max’ variant, is expected to run out of units due to supply constraints. Analyst Ross Young suggested shipping display panels for the new Max variant is “far behind” on schedule. This also suggests that we will see a unique display panel for the iPhone 14 Max, one that is expected to be about the same size as the rumored 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max, but with a different notch implementation.
